The use of rock filled wire baskets has been in use for over a hundred years.

Gabions are rectangular wire mesh baskets of varying size. Typically the lengths are 2m or 4m and of height either 0.5m or 1m. The traditional use of gabion baskets was that when rock filled they could be designed to act as a monolith mass for retaining wall construction that was quite flexible in nature, was free draining and was quite suited to remote construction areas. Gabions may be supplied as either a heavily zinc coated unit or may be supplied with an additional layer of plastic coating over the zinc coated wire to afford additional protection in locations where corrosion is likely to be a problem.

Rock Mattresses are a “thin” gabion and traditionally has been used in applications such as creek and channel linings where long term scour is an issue. The confinement of appropriately sized stone within a mesh effectively increases the resistance of such rock to scour for a given flow condition. Rock Mattress product is typically supplied in plan area of 6m x 2m with varying thickness products ranging between 0.17m to 0.3m.

Like the Link Gabions the product is traditionally supplied as zinc coated unit but may also be supplied with a plastic coating over the zinc where corrosion is likely to be an issue.

Netting products may be supplied by Global Synthetics for the prevention of rock falls in critical areas. This product is sometimes referred to as Rock Fall netting. Roll sizes are generally 2m x 50m but different roll sizes may be manufactured to suit specific applications. Product is available in zinc coated and zinc/plastic coated.
