profab geotextiles:

ProFab® GEOTEXTILE
ProFab® geotextiles are polymer based products that are manufactured from a variety of processes. Generally the engineering application for the product will determine the most suitable type of geotextile that should be selected for use by the designer or contractor.
The primary function of the geotextile is generally one of the following:

drainage
filtration
separation
reinforcement
protection

Sometimes there will be a secondary benefit required of the geotextile i.e. drainage as the primary function and separation as the secondary benefit. There is a very broad differentiation of geotextiles based on the manufacturing processes involved. ProFab® Geotextiles are able to be supplied as either non-woven or woven types and their common use and the basis of selection is further discussed.

ProFab® NON-WOVEN GEOTEXTILES
ProFab® non-woven geotextiles are manufactured from the extrusion of fibres (polyester) which are then laid down on a manufacturing “bed” and then needle punched to entangle the fibres such that a dimensionally stable product is formed. Some additional thermal treatment is then applied to further improve the strength of the geotextile.
Because of this manufacturing process non-woven geotextiles are generally best used in applications of drainage, filtration and protection.

Global Synthetics offer the ProFab® polyester non-woven geotextile in a range of weights, strengths and filtration characteristics for these engineering applications.
In certain applications such as asphalt or chip resealing works the use of a ProFab® paving geotextile may be useful as an interstitial layer (impregnated with bitumen) to provide an impermeable waterproofing layer to the reconstructed pavement and to minimise the propagation of “reflection” cracking.

ProFab® WOVEN GEOTEXTILES
ProFab® Woven geotextiles are manufactured from the extrusion of a polymer (polypropylene or polyester) into either a flat tape or filament product which may be then further processed by slitting or bundling and then weaving to form a fabric.

ProFab® woven geotextiles are ideally suited for applications of reinforcement or separation as the strength of the tape or filament within the fabric may be increased to suit a specific application. ProFab® woven geotextiles additionally have the ability to develop high strengths at relatively low strains which is a very important requirement in applications of reinforcement. Fabric strength is manufactured in two directions and may be varied to suit a particular reinforcement application.

In applications of reinforcement and where a load may need to be sustained by the geotextile for significant periods of time the choice of polymer used in the construction of the fabric will determine the choice of woven product. The influence of creep effects on varying polymer types is well understood and will have a marked influence on the load carrying capability of the geotextile selected.

Global Synthetics offer a range of woven geotextiles for applications of separation and reinforcement. The ProFab® PP range (polypropylene) of products is generally used where the primary function is one of separation with a secondary benefit of reinforcement. Typically the strength range of these products is between 20 kN/m to 80 kN/m. The ProFab® PET range (polyester) of products is used for primary applications of reinforcement over extended periods of time. Typically the strength range of this product is between 100 kN/m to 1000 kN/m.
